Whether you play tennis, pickleball, badminton, or squash, the right equipment can make all the difference in your performance and enjoyment. It’s not about having the most expensive gear—it’s about finding what fits your playing style, skill level, and comfort. Here’s a guide to help you choose the right gear for your racquet sport, from racquets and shoes to grips and apparel.

The Racquet – Your Most Important Partner on the Court

Your racquet is the heart of your game, and small differences in weight, balance, and string tension can have a big impact on how you play.

  • Weight: A lighter racquet (under 10 ounces for tennis, under 3 ounces for badminton) offers quicker reactions and easier maneuverability, while a heavier racquet provides more power and stability.
  • Balance: Head-heavy racquets generate more power, while head-light models offer better control and faster swings.
  • Flexibility: A stiffer frame suits players with fast, powerful strokes, while a more flexible frame helps generate speed for those with slower swings.
  • String tension: Higher tension gives more precision but requires good technique; lower tension provides more power and forgiveness.

If possible, demo a few racquets before buying. Many U.S. tennis shops and clubs offer demo programs so you can test different models on the court.

Shoes – The Foundation of Your Game

A good pair of shoes is just as important as your racquet. They should provide support, stability, and traction so you can move quickly and safely.

  • Tennis: Choose shoes based on the surface. Clay-court shoes have a herringbone tread for grip, while hard-court shoes have durable soles and extra cushioning. Grass-court shoes feature small nubs for traction.
  • Pickleball: Indoor pickleball shoes are similar to volleyball shoes, offering grip and lateral support. Outdoor pickleball shoes need durable soles for asphalt or concrete courts.
  • Badminton and squash: These sports require lightweight, non-marking shoes with strong lateral support and good shock absorption.

Replace your shoes regularly—worn-out soles or poor cushioning can increase your risk of injury.

Grips – Small Details, Big Difference

A proper grip helps you hold the racquet securely without over-tightening your hand. There are two main types:

  • Replacement grip: The base layer that provides shape and cushioning.
  • Overgrip: A thin layer wrapped on top for better sweat absorption and comfort.

If your hands sweat a lot, choose a tacky or moisture-absorbing overgrip. Change it often—fresh grips can improve your feel and control more than you might expect.

Apparel – Comfort and Freedom to Move

Racquet sports demand clothing that’s lightweight, breathable, and flexible. Look for moisture-wicking fabrics that keep you dry and avoid heavy cotton that traps sweat. Mesh panels or ventilation zones can help with airflow during long matches.

For women, a supportive sports bra is essential. Men should look for shorts with stretch waistbands and pockets deep enough to hold tennis balls. In outdoor play, don’t forget a hat or visor and sunscreen for protection.

Accessories That Make a Difference

Small extras can enhance your experience on the court:

  • Wristbands and headbands keep sweat out of your eyes and hands.
  • Racquet bag protects your gear from temperature changes and moisture.
  • Water bottle and towel are must-haves for breaks.
  • Vibration dampeners (especially in tennis) can reduce shock and make your shots feel smoother.

Maintenance – Keep Your Gear in Top Shape

Take care of your equipment so it lasts longer. Store your racquet in a cool, dry place—avoid leaving it in a hot car. Strings lose tension over time, so restring regularly, typically every few months depending on how often you play. Clean your shoes after each session and let them air dry naturally.

Find What Works for You

There’s no single “perfect” setup that fits everyone. The key is to find what feels right for you—technically, physically, and mentally. Take time to test different options, and don’t hesitate to ask coaches or experienced players for advice. The right gear can not only improve your performance but also help prevent injuries and make every game more enjoyable.
